Meet the Artist...

Whilst looking through facebook today, I saw an invitation to take part in the successful series of interviews for Mixed Media May on Cindy Jones Latiner's blog, and I thought what a great idea that I can get the chance to share it with you.  I've been lucky enough to be a featured artist on some lovely blogs this year and for each I have been interviewed and shown a few photos.  This time, I'll be answering the questions here... (I hope you enjoy something a little different).

What does mixed media art mean to you?

I LOVE everything about mixed media art, it allows me the chance to play and explore as many mediums as I want without feeling any restrictions (apart from my own skills with certain media).  It means I can really let loose and let my imagination run away with me.  It also means that I can change what or how I make as the mood takes me.
I LOVE that.

How long have you been a mixed media artist?

Hmm, how long is a piece of string?  This is a tricky one to answer, I'm not really sure but it feels like a LONG time.  Even when I was at art college, I'd always be mixing things up, painting on my fashion designs and sticking embellishments onto prints.  But it's only in the last twelve months that I've really thrown myself into it in a BIG way, and it's only really recently that I actually now BELIEVE that I am an artist. (yes, I know I'm daft but it's true).

I thought this was great quote to go with what I just said.

How has your art impacted or enhanced your life?

If you have been following my blog for a while now, you'll know that I have had heart related health issues, and it's through this that I've been able to revisit my art.  I actually don't think I'd be doing this now if I hadn't been so ill.  It's been a real blessing really and that in itself along with the art has allowed me to really re-asses my life, hopes and dreams.  I'm a huge believer in the healing power of art as well so working my art out has helped me to recover, I truly do believe that.  Not only has my art helped me, it has really enhanced my life.  It's brought me into new situations, into contact with some really wonderful people (some of you are reading this now) and it has given me something to do for ME that is totally enjoyable and I have the pleasure of knowing that it gives others pleasure too, and you can't put a price on that can you?

What are a few of the mixed media supplies you find yourself using most?

PVA, PVA, PVA.
I use it constantly for everything, on everything, in everything.
It's been my number one staple since my art college days.
Another more recent favorite is GESSO, it's so forgiving when I need forgiving... it's just fab.
The other most used items that I have are my pencil crayons, I just adore them.  I don't have a fancy kind, I just use the regular Faber Castell Art Grip ones, they're just what I need.

Who are some of your favorite mixed media artists?

I LOVE the work of Suzi Blu and was recently so proud to be a contributing artist in her new book (it was one of Suzi's videos that helped trigger me making art again).  I'm also a big fan of Danita Art and her cute little ladies.  I LOVE the art of Mary Jane Chadbourne and Denise Philips (both of these ladies have been great supportive friends to me this year).  Mindy Lacefield has the most wonderful playful style and her use of color is just amazing.  Michelle Kral(Mitsi B) is another of my most recent LOVEs, her art is wild, daring and most definatly 'real'.

(you can click each artists name to visit their blogs and see what I'm talking about)

What makes your mixed media art unique?

I guess the fact that it's mine and shows what goes on in my life or in my thoughts.  I have people tell me they know it's mine even if I do a different style or color way, so I guess it's unique.  I don't really believe that anyone is truly unique though, as throughout your artistic life you are like a visual magpie, gathering shiny colorful ideas that you see and making them into something new thats unique to you.
(it's just my opinion, you might have different ideas)
